TDM new algorithm to estimate photovoltaic potential of urban areas
CRS4 Smart Energy Systems group has developed new tools to improve the estimation of the photovoltaic potential of urban areas for roofing systems of public and private buildings. Based on the analysis of the covered surface, the type of construction and the exposure of the roofs, an algorithm has been developed to quickly calculate the effective radiation on these surfaces even in the presence of partial shading.
The activity was financed by the projects SARDINE (Decision Support System for Electricity Production Networks) and TDM (Tessuto Digitale Metropolitano) both funded under the POR FESR 2014-2020 Line 1.2.2.
As part of the TDM project, a study of the inhabited area of Cagliari was carried out, obtaining an estimate of the potential for electricity production with a resolution of one square metre. This represents a significant improvement both in calculation accuracy and processing time. The methodology is easily replicable and the software has been released in the public domain.
